Poker Player 101: Discipline

Discipline is known as a person’s capacity to stay untroubled in times of uncomfortable moments. It also means the study of being in control in stressful situations.

The above definition comes from a dictionary perspective but it hits the meaning of what discipline means to poker players. Lots of aspects in our lives needs discipline but not as dependent like poker is.

The human mind is made to endure a lot of mental strains. But playing poker needs to push the brain into its limits. So discipline is needed to stay in the game. Lots of surprises are in store for poker players. Even superior hands can be beaten by a pair of 5s with the right combination of community cards.

Discipline can be applied in all aspects of the game itself but there are three ultimate points that a poker player needs to ask himself to test out his level of discipline. Here it is:

  • Implementing the various methods in playing the game and the strategies you have learned needs discipline. Can you do it?
  • Can you still be a good player in times of stressful moments?
  • Can you get through bad times while playing poker?

Knowledge is different from doing the things that you know. In playing poker, there are things that you know that you can’t put into action. Others are too afraid to do a risky move if they think that they are going to lose. A disciplined poker player can play on a bigger bet knowing that he has a superior hand and he also knows when to stop whenever he feels that he’s hand only needs a wild chance to win.

In times of stressful environments disciplined poker players knows how to play well. He decides well in hard times and makes precise decision that will eventually lead to his winning. Stress can bring down a good player but a disciplined player stays on the game.

We know that luck has chance of reversing its effect on us. So poker players needs to be mentally aware that sometimes lick is not on their side. This will help them prepare on this kind of situation and will help them decide on their next move.

Even on hard and bad times a disciplined poker player can still focus on the game doing the best of his ability to stay in it. He knows that the down times will pass and he can get through if he stays clear headed and don’t make any decision to tilt the game.

Discipline yourself if you wanted not to lose your money. Especially don’t act recklessly. Losing discipline will make you lose chips faster than a Concorde plane. Just play the game right and practice discipline. This will make you a better player.
